Kat Kelly – “It’s 5 a.m. in Amsterdam and this is how I know.” That’s one of my favorite lines from one of favorite singers from my younger days, Michelle Shocked. That song used to transcend and help me feel more alive when I could pull all-nighters and still show up bright eyed and bushy tailed for whatever was on the docket the following day.

These days, I can barely wait to crawl in bed and hit the buttons on my knock-off Craftmatic adjustable bed. Well, assuming that my 15-month old hasn’t played with the bed’s wireless remote and changed the settings, which is something I worry way more about than I should.

This morning as I was laying in bed contemplating how I fell asleep without brushing my teeth and before I tuned into my Deepak Chopra and Oprah, 21 Day Meditation Challenge, I also had thoughts rolling around in my head. And those thoughts all centered on motivation, how to capitalize on it, and how to reconcile now vs later.

Laying there, it got me to thinking about things that got me fired up over the prior days. It got me thinking about the things that drew passion from my core to the surface. It got me thinking things like, “oh, these are great ideas. I need to write them down when I get up.” But, then it also got me to wondering about how much of the passion and the motivation I would still feel in 6 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours, next week, and beyond.

Most certainly, while the fire that we feel in our bellies warms and cools depending on our surroundings and what is happening at any given moment, my 5 a.m. overthinking moment of the day really had me focused on the importance and the power of ‘now.’ Whether starting a new eating plan or jotting down notes for that business plan, you simply cannot argue with the power of capturing the momentum of ‘now.’

Find a way to capture the message in the breeze and use that to help propel you forward.

Think about solar energy. When the sun shines brightly, solar panels can capture that energy and store it to provide power long after the sun has set. That is the power of your ‘now.’

Sometimes now is an inconvenient time. I encourage you to find some ways to create your own solar panel; be it a sketch book or notebook by your bedside, a pocket recorder, an app on your phone, a laptop, a chisel and a stone, whatever your pleasure, just keep it close at hand. You never know when your ‘now’ might hit. So, always be prepared.

If you are looking for ways to become the best you possible; maybe you have wanted to drop extra weight, quit smoking, go back to school, jump back into the dating scene, whatever it is, ‘now’ is a very powerful tool. Sure, you can wait until tomorrow. But, tomorrow you are not guaranteed the same level of passion that you have right at this very moment. ‘Now.’

As I sit here before the sun comes up, while the rest of the house sleeps and I should be too, I decided that it was really important to catch my ‘now.’ I hope this helps you next time you feel the breeze of ‘now.’ Don’t wait. Capture it. Set your sail, capture the gust, and keep moving forward.
